Softener optimization in Waukesha: what the salt program asks

When a house drains into the Waukesha sewer system, the City of Waukesha has a say in its softener. The City's softener salt program requires each softener in use on that system, a new one included, to be optimized by a company on the City's approved list.

Which softeners the program covers

The City applies its program to any softener whose discharge ends up in the Waukesha sewer system. That system reaches past the city limits: the City names parts of Pewaukee, Wales and the Village of Waukesha among the places it covers.

So the deciding question is where your house drains, not where its water comes from. A home on a private well that drains to the Waukesha sewer is covered all the same.

Softeners already in the basement

If a softener is still in use on that sewer, the City expects it to be optimized by an approved company. Many units in the city were set up for the roughly 21 grain well water, while city taps have run near 8 grains since the lake water arrived in October 2023, so plenty of them were set for a supply that is gone.

For a working softener, that optimization may be the only thing your house needs. It is a smaller step than buying a new system, and a phone call with us will tell you so if it fits.

The City spells out what a full optimization covers: the hardness setting, the salt dosage and the reserve capacity. Turning the hardness number down on your own does not meet the rule.

A new softener counts too

A new softener does not get a pass. Once it is running on the Waukesha sewer it is a softener in use, and the same optimization by a company on the City's list applies, whoever supplied it.

The City says the optimizer is allowed to charge for its visit. For a house on that sewer, the call deals first with whether the brand we supply has a certified optimizer at all, and you should hear that answer before any price, not after you sign.

City Code also requires any new or replacement softener on that sewer to meet a minimum salt efficiency rating, and a new softener installation needs a plumbing permit. How that rating applies to a particular unit is for the City to say, not this site.

Who does the optimizing, and who to ask

Optimization is done by companies on the City's approved list. It is not part of what we do, and our price does not include it.

The City keeps the list of approved optimizers, technicians from local softening companies trained through the Water Quality Association, and it pays part of each full optimization visit. If your softener's brand is not on that list, the City asks you to call its Clean Water Plant. For anything about the list or the visit, the City's softener salt program page is the source.

The deadline behind the program

The Clean Water Plant is under a State of Wisconsin requirement to cut chlorides, and the City says most of those chlorides come from softener salt, which normal treatment does not remove.

The City has until November 1, 2026 to reach compliance. If it falls short, the City says it will regulate softeners further, possibly banning salt-based softeners with very limited exceptions. That is the City's warning, not ours.

Time-clock softeners and taking one out

The City says softeners that regenerate on a timer usually cannot meet its salt standard, and it recommends bypassing and unplugging them or replacing them with a demand-based unit.

If you want to try the lake water without softening, the City suggests putting the softener in bypass and unplugging it for about a month. It does not recommend leaving an unused unit in bypass for good, and it lists disposal options and a softener removal rebate program on its softener salt program page.

How the program shapes a quote call

On a city address, expect to be asked where the house drains. If keeping and optimizing your current softener is the better route, the call will say so. A new system on the Waukesha sewer depends on a technician certified for its brand, so the call tells you where the brand we supply stands before anything else.

Common questions

Can I change my softener's hardness setting myself instead?

The City's rule is that softeners in use on its sewer are optimized by one of its approved optimizers. Check with the City before counting on your own adjustment to meet it.

Is there a Waukesha water softener rebate?

The City lists a softener removal rebate program on its softener salt program page, and it pays part of an approved optimizer's full visit. We do not run or speak for either one, and our one price does not depend on them.

Does the program reach the Village of Waukesha or the Town of Genesee?

It applies wherever a softener discharges to the Waukesha sewer system, whatever the town. If you are unsure where your house drains, ask the City or bring it up on the call.
